Flush or Dump? Yes, it's a real question!

Why in 2018 are we still asking this question? Because the sad and hard fact is that when you part with these plastic based, mainly chemical laden tampons, pads, and pantyliners, their journey has only just begun. These single-use products are made to hang around and for a very long time. They’re designed using materials likely to survive over 500 years! That's right, the very first tampon, liner, and pad ever created are still lingering in a landfill somewhere in the world. Every single disposable menstrual and hygiene product you’ve ever used will outlive your great-grandchild and beyond.

So, what kind of crazy survival substances go into these products that we happily put in our knickers? As manufacturers of tampons and sanitary pad aren’t required to disclose a list of ingredients – you can't really be sure you are near or putting in your vagina.

Nonetheless, we have a pretty good idea. First up is plastic. Each sanitary pad contains the equivalent of around four plastic bags!!

Feeling a healthy concern for your body now that you’re aware of the chemical onslaught those products represent? Now think about the effect of those products after you flush or bin......What happens to the soil and sea those tampons, pads, and liners sit and float in for the next 500 years? When we throw or flush, these products don’t disappear. They pollute.

That's a lot of non-biodegradable waste that is ending up in landfills or clogging up wastewater treatment plants, not to mention all the packaging in wrappers and applicators and the resources used to produce these single-use products. Yet it's a topic that's often not talked about (menstrual bleeding may be uncomfortable for some; but seriously, this is 2018 — get over it) in terms of environmental impact. Luckily, there's a product for that such as Modibodi reuseable period and incontinence underwear to the single-use evil.
